Abdullah Ely
Dr Ely is a group leader in the Wits/SAMRC Antiviral Gene Therapy Research Unit (AGTRU). During his doctoral training he explored the use of the RNA interference pathway for the inhibition of the hepatitis B virus (HBV). He has developed his research interest in gene therapy towards creating solutions for diseases that are of significant medical concerns to South Africa. Currently he is focussing on using novel technologies such as gene editing and in vitro transcribed RNA for the development of prophylactic and therapeutic interventions.
